Holy Crap.
I read this article today (http://www.fayobserver.com/article?id=298186 ) and was caught between total disbelief and snickering myself silly. How in the world could any inmate in that jail make wine? You’d think with all the craziness with and embarrassment the Sheriff’s department has suffered that everyone would be walking a thin line. A VERY thin line. But apparently that’s not the case at all in our jail. I know that I am embarrassed. This is my home. My county. I’ve read the news and heard the crap about that department like everyone else and this is like icing on the cake. Everyone who reads about this will get another laugh on us. ‘Us’ being the idiot citizens of Robeson County, who elect a Sheriff who never really has anything to say publicly and whose jail house has become a winery. Forget the last Sheriff we had and what he did and allowed to happen. Nothing has changed has it?
One disturbing thing in the article was a comment made by the chief jailer, who said that homemade wine is often found during searches of the cells. WTF? He says he plans to ask the dietician to eliminate the only juice the jail now serves (orange juice). My biggest question is why this wasn’t stopped ages ago. Who wanted to wait til ALE (state Alcohol Law Enforcement) was called in and it hit the newspapers? Who thought this would help our county or the Sheriff’s departments reputation?

Here’s my suggestion: cut out all juices and sweets. They’re in jail for God’s sake. Jail. It’s not a picnic. It’s not supposed to be one. Bread and water would be fine with me. But seriously how about a meal with meat, veggies, bread and water? No treats. There should be no treats in jail. Clean up the jail and everyone who works there. Have meetings and tell the workers there won’t be any more bullshit tolerated.
<sarcasm>But since that’s apparently not going to happen, I decided to design a quick label for the ziploc wine bags!
